A Bellwether in One's Cap is the first episode of the Mighty Max Animated Series. The episode features a story by Mark Zaslove & Rob Hudnut and the teleplay by Mark Zaslove, and originally aired September 12, 1993.

Synopsis[]

A boy named Max receives an artifact containing a magical cap that grants him the ability to travel through portals in his quest to be a hero and defeat Skullmaster.

Plot[]

Max receives a package in the mail containing a small statue inscribed with Egyptian hieroglyphs that read: "You have been chosen to be the cap-bearer. Go to the mini-mart and wait for a sign, Mighty Max." Shocked by the message, Max drops the statue, shattering it and revealing a red baseball cap emblazoned with a yellow 'M'.

Upon arriving at the minimart, Max is chased by the Lava Beast sent by Skullmaster. As Max flees, the cap activates a vortex which transports him instantly from his current location to the Mongolian desert. Max is met by Virgil and Norman where he learns that his destiny had been foretold in a prophecy, circa 3,000 BC.

They find a portal to Skull Mountain in Max's house, but Virgil is kidnapped. Max and Norman travel to save him, only to be confronted by Warmonger. Just as Skullmaster corners the trio, Max saves the day by collapsing the tunnels around them using a drill. They jump into a portal to safety, while Skullmaster suffers his defeat.

Epilogue[]

"Well, this week, we went to Mongolia, and Egypt, and then to India, where we saw the Taj Mahal. In 1630, Shah Jahan started building it as a shrine for his wife. It took 20,000 men 22 years to complete. You know, I think it'd take just about that long to clean my room. See you next week!"
