The Axeman Cometh is the twenty-second episode of the Mighty Max Animated Series. The episode was written by ---- and originally aired October 4, 1994.
A pair of lumberjacks chop down a tree, but in the process something that had been chained to the trunk is awakened, a deformed green being bound in chains. He kills the lumberjacks (offscreen) with their own chainsaw.
Meanwhile Max and Felix are waiting in line at the movies when Max sees a poster for a movie called "Portal" starring him, Norman and Virgil. It transports him to the forest where the demonic being was freed. Virgil explains that in ancient times, a tribe called The Strangers attacked Norman's village but were beaten off. Enraged, they had their shaman summon Lockjaw (pronounced "yaw"), the demon of violence, to help their next attack. During the battle, however, Lockjaw screamed and caused massive destruction, prompting the Strangers to help Norman's people capture him. Eventually Lockjaw was imprisoned by being chained to the tree (as a demon, he can't be killed).
Lockjaw begins to chase them through the forest while they attempt to keep him from getting the key to his chains, and Norman becomes more and more determined to slice the demon to pieces until Max manages to keep him from giving in. Eventually Max gives Lockjaw the key, allowing him to scream which causes a landslide and buries the demon.
- This episode is based on Mighty Max Tangles With Lockjaw.
- Max learns the harsh lesson that real violence isn't the same as on TV or the movies. While none of it is shown on screen, Lockjaw is responsible for the grisly murders of several people by the end of the episode.
- Like The Brain Suckers Cometh! is also a reference to the 1939 American play The Iceman Cometh written by Eugene O'Neill.
